| T1220. The Barton Swing Aqueduct was created to carry the Bridgewater Canal over the Manchester Ship Canal. This amazing feat of engineering could swing both water and boat to one side to allow large vessels to pass beneath. It replaced the equally well known stone aqueduct, created by Brindley in the eighteenth century. Here we can see the Swing Aqueduct in motion in its early days. | |
