| T1457. The Barton Swing Aqueduct was built to replace the eighteenth century stone aqueduct, designed by James Brindley. The construction of the Manchester Ship Canal meant the old stone version, which carried the Bridgewater Canal over the River Irwell, had to be removed. The newer Swing Aqueduct is an amazing feat of engineering. When in use, gates seal each end, allowing it to swing full of water. This photograph shows the Aqueduct open, providing a clear route for approaching vessels on the Ship Canal. | |
