| T1677. The construction of the Manchester Ship Canal resulted in the need to remove the famous stone aqueduct at Barton, which had been constructed as part of the Bridgewater Canal in the eighteenth century. It was replaced with the Barton Swing Aqueduct, an amazing feat of engineering. The stone road bridge was also replaced with a new structure. Here we can see navvies working on the Manchester Ship Canal, with the original bridge still in place in the background. | |
