T2716. On the 12th August 1981 areas around the docks in Salford and the Trafford Park industrial Estate in Trafford became the first of a number of Enterprise Zones. The reason the government created these zones was...' to restore vigorous private-sector activity to the zones by removing certain tax burdens and by relaxing or speeding up the application of certain statutory or administrative controls.' As a result of this both Salford and Trafford areas of the Docks underwent large-scale redevelopment not seen since the creation of the Ship Canal and the Docks area.

This is one of a series of contact prints taken in 1983 just as the Docks were undergoing this major regeneration. The once busy cranes of the Port of Manchester Docks await the cutting torch of the scrap merchant. This is a view across the Ship Canal towards No 9 Dock from Mode Wheel Locks on the Manchester Ship Canal.
