Video of the Barton Swing Aqueduct
|
This is the point where the two canals from Bridging the Years cross. The Barton Swing Aqueduct was built in the 1890s to replace the stone aqueduct which had been constructed in the eighteenth century to carry the Bridgewater Canal over the River Irwell. With the arrival of the Manchester Ship Canal, the stone structure was too small and had to be replaced with this larger aqueduct. In the first clip, we can see the Aqueduct starting to swing. Clip two shows the Aqueduct in mid-swing, and clip three shows it coming to rest. The clips are available in QuickTime and Windows Media formats.
